A firefighter was injured Monday morning while battling a blaze at a two-storey Markham home that was struck by lightning.

A fire began around 2:30 a.m. on the roof of a home on Peter Street, near Main Street and 16th Avenue.

A family was inside the home at the time of the strike, but escaped without injury, police said.

It is not clear how the firefighter was hurt, but he was taken to hospital on a backboard as a precaution.
