OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Six years and $1 million later, the Ministry of Environment has approved the Hanover Walkerton landfill site expansion project.

Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly says it will add more than 30 years of life to the landfill.

Hambly says the expansion work will be split into four phases and will begin as soon as the engineering work is finalized.

The first phase should be completed in 2013, around the same time the current landfill site is expected to reach its full capacity.

By the time phase one is complete, $6 million will have gone into the project.

Hambly says Hanover and Brockton were wise to begin planning for this project six years ago.
