An intense rain storm thundered over North York and parts of Thornhill Tuesday afternoon, toppling trees and flooding local roadways.

The intense rainfall only lasted about 10 minutes but it was strong enough to knock over 15 trees in Willowdale.

One boy saw lightning hit a tree before it fell on top of his family's parked car on Newton Drive.

"I thought it was going to hit the top of the tree but it went down and hit the bottom," said Christopher Mariati. "Then half the tree fell down."

A police officer monitoring local roads told CTV Toronto the storm felt like a monsoon.

"The rain wasn't actually coming down, it was coming side to side," he said.

Environment Canada predicts it will rain all week in the Greater Toronto Area through the weekend.
