A number of Toronto bars are offering "happy hour" specials this week as part of a promotion that hopes to raise awareness about advance polls in the municipal election.
Called #HappyVotingHourTO, the non-partisan event runs until Friday and aims to educate voters about advance polls.
"The key thing with this is… educating people that, 'Hey, you've got six chances to vote this week,'" event organizer Marcello Cabezas said Tuesday.
Advance polls opened Tuesday morning and close Sunday at 7 p.m.
So far, a handful of bars, including the Rock Lobster's Ossington location and the Cadillac Lounge on Queen Street West, are participating in the four-day event.
Cabezas said the idea for the promotion came from a desire to make the voting process more fun.
"A bunch of us got together and kind of said, 'What is one simple thing that we could do to help make voting more fun? We came up with this idea," he said. "It is just trying to create the idea that voting can be collective experience -- similar to you going out with your buddies to watch the game or going to a concert."
Cabezas said if the pilot project is successful, they will consider organizing a "happy hour" promotion on Oct. 27, election day.
