A committee of citizens from the Western Greater Toronto Area has released a report calling on all levels of government to help address transit woes in the city.
The report, released Tuesday by the Western GTA MOVE Task Force, includes 28 recommendations on the future of transit planning and governance in the GTA.
One of the recommendations listed in the report, called Unlocking Our Gridlock Together: A Citizens Report on Transit, is the allocation of "the entirety of Gas Tax revenue to address transit issues," by the federal government.
It advises the government, as part of a national transport strategy, to divert all gas tax revenues to be spent on solving gridlock in major cities, to help increase transit ridership, and reduce dependency on vehicles.
It also calls on the provincial and federal governments to create "dedicated long-term" funds specifically to be used for mass transit projects.
Other recommendations include an integrated transit fare system across the GTHA, and smart pricing, with discounts for transit riders travelling during "off-peak" hours.
The Presto smart card system is already being used by several transit operators in the GTHA, but is currently only available at 14 TTC stations.
The report was compiled by a committee of 28 citizens from the Peel and Halton regions.
The complete report can be viewed on the Western GTA Summit website.
