The family of a promising Toronto hockey player murdered one year ago donated $23,000 to the Hospital for Sick Children on Monday.

The money was raised at a charity golf tournament held in honour of 25-year-old Michael Serba in September.

Friends and family of the Etobicoke resident were on hand to present the donation, which will be used for organ donation research at the hospital.

Serba was killed in November 2006 outside a bar in Toronto's Bloor West Village. Police said he was involved in a confrontation while withdrawing money from an ATM.

Serba was allegedly sucker-punched by his attacker in an alley, and then struck in the head with an object, possibly a brick.

He passed away after spending days in a coma. His family donated his organs.

Serba was a student at Norwich University in Vermont, but had been in Etobicoke during the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend. He attended the school on a hockey scholarship.

Hundreds of mourners attended his funeral, including his entire hockey team. The players wore hockey jerseys in Serba's honour.

Police have charged a young man with murder in the slaying.
