An elderly woman has died after she was pulled from a burning apartment building in south Etobicoke on Thursday morning, Toronto EMS confirmed.

Police said the woman was without vital signs when EMS crews removed her from the high-rise building on Lakeshore Drive just after 9:30 a.m.

Fire crews were able to evacuate the building and extinguish the fire in about half an hour, said Const. Tony Vella of Toronto police.

Police said paramedics performed CPR on the woman, but she eventually succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.

The building's superintendent told CTV Toronto that the woman lived on the seventh floor of the apartment building with her husband, who was out of the out of the high-rise at the time of the fire,.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
