For the second time in less than a week, police are investigating reports of gunshots fired into a home in Whitby.

Durham Region Police Service (DRPS) say this latest incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday night near Taunton Road East and Rivers Edge Place, just west of Thickson Road.

Police say officers at the scene found several bullet holes in the home and that it was unoccupied at the time of the shooting.

A man wearing dark clothing was seen fleeing the area in a white Mercedes SUV, they said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information or surveillance video to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

The investigation comes amid an uptick in neighbourhood-area shootings in Durham Region.

Police say two homes were hit by about 20 bullets in the Haverhill Drive area of Whitby early Thursday morning.

Just one day earlier, a housing complex in Oshawa was also hit by gun violence when 14 shots were fired while families were sleeping overnight.
