An 87-year-old woman is dead following a crash on Wednesday afternoon in Toronto's north end, police say.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 50s, also died, but not as a result of the accident, police said.

Officials said they were investigating the possibility that the man lost control of the car because of a medical episode.

"We lost more than one person's life here, and that is a tragic situation," said Const. Hugh Smith.

Police said three elderly pedestrians were struck at about noon at Steeles Avenue West and Carpenter Road when a vehicle lost control.

The woman's 80-year-old sister was taken to Sunnybrook hospital in serious condition, Toronto EMS said.

The vehicle also struck a pole and took down wires. The car travelled 80 to 100 metres before coming to a stop.

Steeles Avenue West is closed in both directions between Carpenter Road and Bathurst Street.
