TORONTO -- The City of Toronto has issued an extreme heat alert.
The city has opened a number of cooling centres to help people escape the scorching heat.
Officials are advising the public to stay in air conditioned places such as shopping malls, local libraries and neighbourhood community centres.
They say locals should make sure friends, family and neighbours are keeping cool and comfortable while the mercury rises.
The extreme heat alert will be in effect until further notice.
