Taking cues from the provincial government, the city of Toronto has banned workers from using the popular networking website Facebook, according to a newspaper report.

City employees will no longer have access to the website while at work, The Globe and Mail reported.

However, city councillors and those working in the mayor's office will still be allowed to "poke" their "friends" while on the job.

City spokesman Brad Ross says councillors use Facebook as a "communications tool'' in order to communicate with their constituents.

Ross says there is no evidence any of the city's 23,000 employees are wasting time on the website.

However, managers decided to ban Facebook at work to remove the temptation to waste "an inordinate amount of time.''

City employees such as TTC workers and police are not part of the ban, the Toronto Star reported.

Queen's Park announced last week all Ontario government employees, as well as MPPs and cabinet ministers, will not have access to the 21 million-member networking website.

The city's computer network already blocks access to porn, gambling, dating websites and YouTube.
