Police have confirmed that a body recovered from the Humber River is that of a Toronto man who went in after his dog last week.

Police say the man slipped into the river at Cruikshank Park, near Lawrence Avenue West and Weston Road, Wednesday night at around 5:30 p.m. after he entered the water to try and rescue his dog.

The dog was able to get out of the river on its own, but the man disappeared in the turbulent water. At the time, the river was flowing higher and faster than usual due to heavy rain.

Over the weekend, police confirmed that they had recovered a body from the river near the Old Mill Bridge, but did not confirm the person’s identity.

On Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed that the body recovered on the weekend was that of the 33-year-old man who tried to save his pet.

Friends have identified the man as Peter Barnaba.

In a press release issued Tuesday afternoon, police said the man's name would not be released.
