TORONTO -- A group of Toronto residents is calling for action after a string of sexual assaults in a west-end neighbourhood.
More than 50 people gathered for a block party at a local park on Saturday night to meet their neighbours and call for community action in the wake of at least 10 assaults in recent weeks.
Organizer Stephanie Guthrie says the goal of the Take Back the Block party is to help residents create a network of strength and support in their communities.
She says people are angry about the assaults but the party is a way of bringing them together.
That sentiment was repeated by city Coun. Adam Vaughan and New Democrat MP Olivia Chow, who represent parts of the area.
Chow says if people work together they won't have to be afraid.
"The street belongs to us. We're going to take it back," she told the crowd.
Others spoke of their frustration of having to look over their shoulders while walking in their own neighbourhoods. Many of the attacks reported since mid-August involved women walking alone at night.
"You shouldn't have to be vigilant about your life to get from Point A to Point B," said Kate Adach, 28. "Men don't have to do that. They can let their guard down. We all deserve to be able to do that in our own city."
Those who attended were handed tip sheets with advice such as walking in groups and keeping porch lights on at night.
