Former Toronto police chief Bill Blair will be heading to Ottawa after a landslide victory in the Scarborough Southwest riding.
Blair, who retired in April after 10 years on the job as Toronto’s chief of police, beat out NDP incumbent Dan Harris.
Blair was congratulated by a large crowd in his riding on Monday night as he made his victory speech.
“History was made tonight and I have to tell you how proud I am today and how excited I am by the opportunities that the Canadian people have given the new Liberal government and Justin Trudeau,” Blair said.
Blair said he believes “there is a strong appetite in this country for change.”
“I want to be a strong and effective voice for this community,” Blair said.
“My first priority is the people of Scarborough Southwest,” he added.
Blair was a front-runner in the riding largely due to his name recognition after being Toronto’s top cop.
Blair was also running against Green Party candidate Tommy Taylor, a protester during the G20 who was arrested and detained for 24 hours without being charged.
