TORONTO - About 900 workers employed by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) have ratified a new collective agreement by a margin of 87 per cent.

The Canadian Auto Workers union says the agreement includes a 12 per cent wage increase over the life of the contract, which runs through July 2013.

The CAW says the agreement was achieved after "an extremely difficult set of negotiations" with the GTAA bargaining committee.

This agreement marks the first time the CAW has negotiated a contract for GTAA workers who used to be represented by three bargaining units.

The GTAA applied in March 2007 to consolidate the units into one, and a year later, the CAW, which represented one of the units, won a vote to represent all workers at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

The workers include maintenance staff, skilled trades and professionals, baggage handling, operations and office and technical administration employees.
