TORONTO - Advocates are urging the province to fork over the $300 million in child care investments it promised as part of its 2003 "Best Start'' campaign.
About two dozen parents and child care advocates gathered at a Toronto daycare Wednesday to re-enact the more than three-year-old provincial government funding announcement they say was never delivered.
Organized by the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care, parents and advocates spoke of long wait times for child care spaces and the lack of affordable ones across the province.
Coalition executive director Elizabeth Ablett says child care in Ontario is in "a crisis'' because of the government's failure to act on its promise.
The coalition says there are more than 1.9 million children under the age of 12 in Ontario, but just over 200,000 regulated child care spaces.
