Police have arrested four suspects in connection with a Jane-and-Finch shooting that sent five people to hospital on Thursday.

In a statement released Thursday night, police said one of the suspects was shot in an "interaction with police" during the arrest.

The Special Investigations Unit, which has been called to probe the incident, says the police shooting happened while officers were investigating a vehicle on Elmhurst Drive, near Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard.

The SIU says the male suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say four guns have also been recovered. They say the victims, one female and four males, suffered gunshot wounds.

Toronto Paramedics Services say one person is in life-threatening condition. A police officer on scene performed CPR on that victim, and he was revived at hospital.

Authorities say the shooting happened in the area of Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue, near a high school and community centre, shortly before 6 p.m.

Sgt. Steve Hicks told The Canadian Press that he was running a youth program at the centre at the time of the shooting, and rushed to the scene.

He said police know the victims, whose names have not been released.

The SIU is automatically called in to review cases involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
