A Toronto high school teacher has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

Police said the incident stems from an incident in February when a female student at Leaside High School was sexually assaulted. Police did not say if the assault happened on school property or during school hours.

Parents at the high school were informed of the case in a letter on Wednesday.

“We know that this situation may be upsetting for some of our students and we will ensure that supports are in place for those students,” Jeannette Plonka, the school’s principal, said in the letter.

Plonka said the teacher has been suspended, and a supply teacher will fill in pending the results of the accused’s trial.

A team of social workers will be available to speak with students on Thursday and Friday. Officials will be holding a meeting with parents at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the school’s library.

Wayne Crooks, 37, has been charged with one count of sexual assault.

Crooks is scheduled to appear in court May 27.
