Thousands of hydro customers in Toronto were left in the dark Tuesday night as a wintery mix of snow and freezing rain hit the city.

The messy weather resulted in blackouts for thousands of residents across the city. Toronto Hydro says a Hydro One transmission line went down at approximately 8 p.m., resulting in 87,000 customers temporarily losing their power.

The transmission line came back online 30 minutes later, and power was restored to approximately 72,000 customers.

Hydro Crews continued to work through the night, as 25,000 customers were still without power in parts of the city.

North of the city, thousands of customers were also in the dark. Power Stream says the following areas were without power:

  • Leslie Street and 16th Avenue in Richmond Hill: approximately 3,850 customers
  • Weston Road and Hwy. 7 in Vaughan: approximately 2,600 customers

Earlier on Tuesday, Toronto's Yorkdale Shopping Centre was forced to shut down early due to a power outage. The lights have since been turned back on, but the mall remained closed for the rest of the night.

Road closures

The winter weather conditions also closed a number of roads due to hydro pole fires. Police say the following streets were shut down Tuesday night:

  • Norfinch Drive, south of Steeles Avenue West
  • Birchmount Road, south of Hwy. 401
  • Southbound Kennedy Road, north of Huntingwood Drive
  • Northbound Dufferin Street at Lawrence Avenue West

  • Intersection of Dixon Road and Islington Avenue due to a blown transformer
  • Intersection of Victoria Park Avenue and Finch Avenue East
  • Intersection of Finch Avenue West and Chesswood Drive

Drivers were also being warned of flooding on the northbound Don Valley Parkway east exit, south of Lawrence Avenue.
