A husband and wife in Ajax were allegedly tied up by armed assailants who gained access to their home Thursday night by posing as construction workers.

Durham Regional Police officers were at the home Friday trying to piece together what happened.

Police believe two men and a woman – dressed in construction-type clothing -- arrived at the home in both a white cube-van and a U-Haul-type van with no signage.

Police say the suspects were armed, and tied the couple up and put them in the basement of the home, located on Morden Crescent in a normally quiet neighbourhood.

"At one point, the husband was able to break free and notify a neighbour who got in touch with police. We also understand these three people had weapons on them, guns and knives," said CP24’s Cristina Tenaglia, reporting from the scene.

"Police are not able to confirm whether they took anything from the home, they also weren't able to confirm whether the husband and wife knew their allege attackers but they were able to tell us the husband and wife are doing OK."

Police are searching for two black males and a black female. No further description has been released.
