A man is dead and a woman is in hospital after a vehicle swerved and struck them in Alliston, northwest of Toronto, early Friday morning.

A crew of New Tecumseh Public Works employees were painting traffic lines on the shoulder of Victoria Street between Church and King Streets shortly before 3 a.m.

As the male and female worked, a westbound Ford F150 pickup truck veered from the street into the right lane, reserved for parked cars, and struck two of the workers. The truck fled the scene, Ontario Provincial Police said in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

The male worker was airlifted to a Toronto-area hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the female worker was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Hours later, OPP confirmed that the 41-year-old man, who will not be identified until all next of kin have been contacted, later succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.

Shortly after the incident, police located a vehicle nearby and a 32-year-old man was arrested and transported to a nearby station for testing. He has been charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident and impaired driving causing bodilu harm.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact OPP at 705-434-1939.

"If you suspect that someone is driving or is about to drive impaired, call 9-1-1 and report it," OPP Const. Paul Nancekivell wrote in the statement
