Toronto fire officials say a family was not home when a fire started in the upper portion of their Etobicoke home on Sunday.

Approximately 60 firefighters and 15 trucks fought the blaze on Herne Hill, in the Dundas Street West and Royal York Road area, which they were notified about shortly after 1 p.m.

As of 2:30 p.m., the fire was mostly out, but some smoke could still be seen coming from the roof.

A Toronto fire official said the second floor was gutted and that there is approximately $200,000 of damage to the home. He said the fire appears to have started in a bedroom above the garage.

The home’s owner told CP24 that she was at a neighbour’s place when received a call from her alarm company about smoke in her house. After rushing home, she could see some windows had been blown out.

John D'Aloisio, Platoon Chief for Toronto Fire, said smoke alarms were functioning. But he reminded the public that they should consistently check the batteries in their alarms.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
