The police officer shot at a Brampton courthouse last week has been released from hospital, Peel Regional Police said Friday.

Const. Mike Klarenbeek was providing security at the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse last Friday when a man walked into the courthouse at around 11 a.m. and opened fire.

Klarenbeek, a 30-year veteran with the Peel Regional Police force, was wounded in the shooting and rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. The suspected shooter was then killed by police.

Klarenbeek’s wife, Lynn, said her family is thankful her husband was able to return home on Friday.

“Our police family has been very supportive and have taken very good care of us. Mike and I have both been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support,” she said in a police news release. “We would like to thank everyone, including the media, for all of the support. We particularly would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and all those who were responsible for providing excellent medical care to Mike over the past week.”

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit -- which investigates all police actions involving death or serious injury -- have identified the courthouse shooter as Charnjit Singh Bassi, 45, of Brampton.

Few details have emerged as to why Bassi was at the courthouse last Friday. The SIU is continuing its investigation of the incident.
