Toronto’s leading mayoral candidates say they will show voters who donated to their campaigns – before election day.

John Tory, who has led in the polls for several weeks, said his campaign will release a list of donors soon.

“We’re going to put it out, as I did in 2003 when I ran for mayor before,” he told reporters Saturday.

The issue arose after candidate Olivia Chow pointed out that Tory hadn’t yet released his.

“What does John Tory have to hide?,” Chow said. “Why won’t he come clean and tell people who his backers are?”

Candidate Doug Ford has also committed to releasing his list.

“You’ll see my donors. They’re average folks,” he said. “Take a look at Tory’s donors. You’ll have every political activist, every political insider out there.”

Candidates running for mayor in Toronto cannot accept contributions from corporations or trade unions, but individuals may donate up to $2,500 per candidate.

A list of all people who donated more than $100 will be published on the City of Toronto website, but not until after the election.

Sunday is the last day voters can cast ballots in advance polls taking place across the city. Election day is Monday, Oct. 27.

On Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m., CTV Toronto will host the mayoral candidates in one of the final debates.
