A man has died after being struck by a vehicle in Markham on Saturday afternoon.

The man was walking in the Denison Street and Mallory Avenue area around 4 p.m.

“It looks like he may have been crossing the road (and was) struck by the first vehicle that stopped. (The) second vehicle following behind may have struck him, too. And according to one witness that we possible have, he may have been struck by three other vehicles that did not stay,” York Regional Police Sgt. Peter Kalpouzos said.

The man may have first been hit by a beige Lexus, police said. They believe the man was then thrown into oncoming traffic.

Denison Street is closed in both directions between Mallory Avenue and Aldergrove Drive while officers investigate.

“We’re appealing to any witnesses to come forward that witnessed the accident,” Kalpouzos said, or anyone who may have a “description of the other vehicles that left the scene.”

It was initially reported the man was elderly, however, Kalpouzos later said they believed the man was in his 50s or 60s.

The Major Collision Bureau has taken over the investigation.
