Environment Canada says a “significant snowstorm” is expected to hit Toronto on Thursday night.
The agency issued a storm watch for the city, warning that light snow will start moving into the region from Michigan and Lake Huron early Thursday morning.
The snow will intensify Thursday night with the possibility of freezing rain and ice pellets. The temperature in Toronto is expected to reach a high of -2 C and a low of -3 C.
The storm is a result of an Alberta clipper merging with a Texas low, said the weather agency.
Heavy snow is expected to continue into Friday as the Alberta clipper moves south of the Great Lakes. The temperature in the city is expected to reach a high of -2 C.
Parts of southern and eastern Ontario, including Toronto, may receive up to 15 centimetres of snow. However, 25 centimetres of snow is not out of the question for some regions, said the agency.
Strong easterly winds may also cause blowing snow in many areas Thursday night and Friday.
Toronto snow removal crews spent Wednesday prepping the city’s snow plows, salt trucks and sidewalk plows.
Officials said the city’s 200 salt trucks, 600 plows and 300 sidewalk plows will be out in full force during the storm, working to remove the snow.
