The grandmother of a Milton, Ont. toddler who died last week after being left alone in a hot car is now facing criminal charges.
Halton Regional Police say Leslie McDonald, 51, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life in the death of her grandson, Maximus Huyskens. She was released and is scheduled for a court appearance on Aug. 14.
Max died of heat exposure on June 26, a month before his second birthday. Police have said the boy died after "being exposed to high-level temperatures for an extended period of time" in a sedan outside his home. Temperatures in Milton on the day of his death exceeded 30 C with high humidity.
Investigators have said the child was in the care of his maternal grandmother while his father was at work and his mother was at an appointment.
A funeral for the boy was held Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening, a three-year-old girl in Edmonton died after being found in a hot SUV. Police say the girl was not left in the car by a caregiver, but didn't say how she got there except to note that the vehicle she was found in was not locked.
Edmonton police said Thursday they had closed their investigation and wouldn’t be laying charges after deciding that no crime took place.
