A funeral was held Monday for a homeless man who died in Scarborough earlier this month.

Grant Alex Faulkner, known to friends as "Gunner," died when a makeshift shelter caught fire.

Firefighters were called to 1940 McCowan Rd., just north of Nugget Avenue, at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 13. The fire was in a shelter at the back of the property, built in a section of brush behind a cinder block wall.

When the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the man's body inside. Officials on scene believed the man may have started the fire to keep warm. Foul play was not suspected.

A friend told CTV Toronto that Faulkner would be honoured in a ceremony at St. Timothy's Anglican Church, located at 4125 Sheppard Ave. E., just east of Kennedy Road.

The visitation was at 11 a.m., followed by a funeral.

Faulkner was 50 when he died. According to a death notice posted by Ogden Funeral Home, he had three daughters and a granddaughter.

He will be buried in August on Manitoulin Island. Instead of flowers, the family requests those wishing to pay their respects make donations to Agincourt Community Services Association.
