A fatal overnight fire at what officials say may have been a rooming house in Toronto's west end has been deemed a homicide.

The Junction Triangle fire claimed the life of a man believed to be in his 40s. Firefighters pulled his lifeless body from the top floor of the three-storey building on May 17 after knocking down the two-alarm blaze.

A dozen firetrucks and 45 firefighters were called to the area of Dupont Street and Perth Avenue at approximately 12:20 a.m. Officials previously said the fire likely started on the second floor.

On Thursday, the Toronto Police Homicide unit took up the case, after an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's office and witness accounts.
