The family of a Mississauga man killed Thursday on the Queen Elizabeth Way after a fire extinguisher crashed through his windshield is reeling from their loss, as they try to make sense of what happened.

On Friday, police released the name of the driver who lost control of his Toyota Rav4 and eventually crashed into a wooded area near Mississauga Road after striking the centre guardrail and careening across all three westbound lanes.

Police said Miguel Pena was pronounced dead at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital.

Nora Malabana, the sister of Pena, told CTV Toronto the sudden death has left the family struggling to cope with the loss.

Pena, who worked as a webmaster for an Oakville-based company, leaves behind an 11-year-old son with severe autism.

"It's so sad that we had to lose a person like him, especially for the son," Malabana said.

Both Pena and his wife Sophie emigrated from the Philippines to give the boy a better life.

"He needed a mom and a dad to help him," Malabana said.

Police said they are still investigating the incident.

The crash, which happened around 8:15 a.m., closed the westbound lanes through the morning commute as police and fire crews cleared the scene.
