OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Police in central Ontario say some motorists are ignoring signs on roads that have been closed because it is not safe to travel on them.

Provincial police say the drivers don't generally get very far before realizing the road was closed for a good reason and get stuck.

Officials say roads have to be cleared of stuck motor vehicles before snowplows can clear them properly.

Several roads have been closed because of icy and snowy conditions, with poor visibility in blowing snow.

Provincial police continue to urge motorists to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile in northern Ontario, a section of Highway 11 near North Bay has been closed due to several accidents in whiteout conditions.

Provincial police say a number of tractor-trailers have jackknifed on the highway, and several vehicles ended up in ditches.
