A deer has been brought back to its habitat after taking a dip in a Whitby pool.

Durham Regional Police were called to a home on Fallingbrook Street, in the area of Taunton Road and Brock Street, shortly after 8 a.m.

Police called animal services to assist them in capturing the female deer, as they were concerned it might run into traffic on Taunton Road.

The deer was contained in a backyard, and animal services planned to tranquilize it before moving it to the woods. Officers slowly entered the backyard, but spooked the animal. The doe jumped over a nearby fence, landing in a neighbour's pool.

Police and animal services crews scaled the fence and tranquilized the deer in the pool. They then used a pool skimmer to keep it in the shallow end until the tranquilizer took effect.

Once the deer was asleep, it was removed from the water and driven to a forest north of the neighbourhood where it was released.

"Thanks to good luck and great team work between members of the community, Animal Control Services and Durham Regional Police, the deer was able to survive the ordeal," officers said in a statement.
