A citizen intervened in a bank robbery that was in progress Friday afternoon leading to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect.

It happened at around 4 p.m. at a bank located near Lawrence Avenue East and Kennedy Road in the city’s Dorset Park area.

According to police, a man walked into a bank branch, bypassed other customers waiting in line and approached an open teller.

The man handed the teller a hold-up note indicating he was armed and making a demand for cash.

Once he obtained the cash, police said he began to bang on the counter and demand more money from the other bank employees.

At this point, a citizen who had been waiting in line at the bank proceeded to grab the man in an attempt to detain him.

Police said a struggle ensued between the citizen and the suspect and the altercation continued until the parking lot officers arrived and made an arrest.

The citizen sustained minor injuries as a result of the struggle.

Andre Cardall Hardware was arrested and charged with robbery and disguise with intent.

He made an appearance in court at Old City Hall on Saturday.
