The TTC has completed its overhaul of Union Station's subway platforms, but the City of Toronto's separate renovation project is still months from being finished.
Construction on the $137.5-million project began in May 2011. The modernized Toronto Transit Commission station includes:
- A second subway platform
- An expanded concourse with a single TTC fare-paid area
- Improved signage
"The new concourse and second platform at Union Station will provide TTC customers with a modern, convenient and less-crowded subway station for their commute," TTC chair and Coun. Josh Colle said in statement. "Over 100,000 TTC passengers who travel through Union subway station daily will have a more pleasant journey."
The subway portion of the project was funded by the City of Toronto, and the provincial and federal governments through Waterfront Toronto.
The larger renovation project, which includes expansion of the GO concourse and the creation of a new PATH system connecting Union Station to Wellington Street, is expected to be completed in 2017.
The improved TTC subway station also features an art wall created by Toronto artist Stuart Reid. The large piece -- made of black-and-white images, coloured glass and poetry -- reflects the artists shared experience with other subway riders over the years.
