Traffic conditions improved on Tuesday, day two of the temporary HOV lanes on GTA highways, police said.
Only one day earlier, on Monday there were 12 reported collisions between 6 and 9 a.m. alone.
Police would not confirm if the number of collisions on Monday morning were higher than usual because of the new temporary HOV lanes. During the same time last week, there were zero collisions.
Meawhile on Tuesday morning, there was one collision on the Toronto highways.
“Without doing a complete audit it is difficult to say what the true cause is however they do correlate with the opening of the HOV lanes,” Toronto Police Const. Kevin Kealy said.
Police would not release how many motorists were ticketed yesterday for driving in the HOV lanes without meeting the requirements.
Police are also asking motorists to follow the ‘Steer it and Clear it’ motto if involved in a collision. Motorists involved in minor collisions are urged to move off the highway and then exchange personal information.
Police say clearing collisions more quickly would assist with backlogs and avoid the possibility of secondary collisions.
In addition, police added new technology to their fleet ahead of the games, including drones that assist with reconstructing collison scenes after serious collisions.
