Police are looking for at least one suspect in connection to a west-end shooting that left a 26-year-old Toronto man dead Monday evening.
The victim, identified by police on Tuesday as Christopher Kotsopoulos, suffered "an obvious gunshot wound to the chest" before he was taken to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, a news release from the Toronto Police Service said.
Police said officers were on their way to the Swansea Mews community housing project, in The Queensway and Windermere Avenue area, on Monday for an unrelated incident when shots were fired before 6 p.m.
"(I heard) two giant kabooms," a young boy told CTV Toronto.
Paramedics were already inside the low-rise housing complex when they heard the gunfire ring out, CTV Toronto's Tamara Cherry reported. Paramedics found Kotsopoulos on a pathway near the housing complex.
After the shooting, tactical officers scoured the area for suspects but were unable to find a shooter or a weapon. It's still unclear how many suspects police are looking for -- investigators said as many as four people could have been involved in the shooting.
Police said many people were in the area at the time of the shooting and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Kotsopoulos -- who is well-known to police but comes from a good family -- was scheduled to appear in a Toronto courtroom next week on allegations that he disobeyed bail conditions. The 26-year-old was also supposed to appear in a Lindsay, Ont. courtroom next month on a charge for aggravated assault.
The last known address police have for Kotsopoulos is in east-end Toronto.
Swansea Mews is home to a Toronto Community Housing apartment complex.
The TCH board chair and CEO on Tuesday issued a joint statement, saying they were "troubled and saddened by last night's shooting."
"Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Kotsopoulos."
The board said it has turned over security camera footage to investigators.
A command post has been set up at the entrance of the housing complex and will be maintained for at least the next couple of days to give residents in the area an opportunity to speak to police.
A post-mortem was scheduled for Tuesday.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7412 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
