One man is dead after gunfire erupted in Toronto late Friday night.

Police found Ricardo Francis on the lawn of a townhouse after they were called to Eden Garth Court shortly before 10:30 p.m. because of multiple gunshots.

The 23-year-old, also known as Ricky, suffered trauma to the chest and had no vital sings, police said.

Emergency workers tried to revive him, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Francis didn't live in the townhouse complex, but frequented it. They also said they have been called to the location before.

Residents said they originally mistook the sound of gunshots for fireworks -- they said the incident happened during a party.

The father of two was known to authorities, and police said they don't know if he was armed.

"We don't know if there was gunfire from the deceased at this time," said Det. Doug Sansom during a press conference.

Steve Sardouk, who went to school with Francis, said he was very upset when he found out who the victim was.

"When I saw his mom grieving it was hard for me and my mom," Sardouk said.

He also said Francis was a stand-up guy, but he was hanging out with a shady crowd.

"He was good guy, just hung around wrong guys I guess," Sardouk said.

Residents said the community is close, and they were shocked to hear Francis was dead.

"I was really surprised -- I don't know why they do that," one man said.

Police said they don't have a suspect, but a witness said a dark blue or black Honda or Acura sped away from the scene. They're encouraging more people to come forward.

"We are continuing canvasses ...there were lots of people around, it was a summer evening -- there should be lots of witnesses to this incident," Sansom said.
