A fire that started in a highrise apartment building in Toronto’s east end has sent four people, including one firefighter, to hospital.

The fire broke out at 30 Denton Ave., near Danforth Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue, shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics said two patients, a 42-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, were taken to East General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

A third patient was taken to the burns unit at Sunnybrook hospital in serious condition.

A fire captain was also burned in the blaze. He was also taken to the burns unit at Sunnybrook hospital with serious injuries, paramedics said.

A firefighter on the scene confirmed that high winds made fighting the fire more difficult and caused the fire to spread to additional units.

The fire was out by 8 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene to clear smoke from the building.

Paramedics said they were standing by in case there were any more injuries.
