After spending most of January under extreme weather conditions, residents of southern Ontario are finally set to escape a deep freeze that has forced people to hibernate indoors.
The temperature is returning to seasonal territory this week and it appears the warm-up will be accompanied by a few centimetres of snow.
Until then, he GTA will remain in winter’s icy grip. People are waking up to a wind chill of -30 and the temperature will rise to just -10 C in the afternoon before dipping to -14 C overnight.
Environment Canada said it expects to cancel its wind chill warning at some point Wednesday.
Things will improve Thursday through the weekend when the winds tap into much warmer air, said CP24 meteorologist Bill Coulter.
“There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s going to warm up significantly, especially Friday and Saturday,” Coulter said.
Thursday is expected to be windy with a high of -2 C in the afternoon and periods of snow in the evening.
Flurries are possible Friday, when the temperature hits -1 C -- a balmy figure compared with the extreme cold that has encased Ontario for days.
More snow is expected Saturday. Highs of -1 C are expected over the weekend.
Normal temperatures for this time of year are highs of -2 C and lows of -9 C.
