In a 245-page report released Tuesday titled Toronto's Vital Signs, the Toronto Foundation examines everything from the economy to education to commuting. Here are the most interesting facts from the report:
- Toronto is the second most unaffordable housing market in Canada as the cost of an average two-storey home requires a household income of at least $140,000 per year.
- Only 1.7 per cent of apartments in the city are vacant.
- More than half, 51 per cent, of Toronto residents were born outside of Canada.
- The number of youth who report being inactive during leisure time jumped from 31.9 per cent in 2012 to 40.5 per cent in 2013.
- 16 per cent of Torontonians drink heavily at least once a month. 17 per cent of Torontonians smoke.
- Toronto's schools rank third among 24 global metropolitan cities on the Toronto Regional Board of Trade's 2014 Scorecard on Prosperity. 83 per cent of students in the Toronto District School Board graduated.
- Tourists contributed $6.45 billion to the Toronto economy as the region set new records in 2013 for overseas visitors and hotel room nights sold.
- Toronto has 147 high rises under construction.
- Unemployment is at 8.8 per cent and youth unemployment is 17.6 per cent, well above the national average of 7 and 13.4 per cent respectively.
- The roundtrip commute for the average resident is 66 minutes. Congestion costs the greater Toronto and Hamilton region more than $6 billion a year in lost productivity.
