WEST LINCOLN, Ont. - A 25-year-old man was found cold and wet but otherwise unharmed after becoming lost overnight while snowmobiling in the Niagara Region.
Police say the man left his home in Smithville, southeast of Hamilton, just after midnight Wednesday to take his snowmobile out for a short ride.
But they say the man quickly became disoriented in the darkness and ended up in unfamiliar territory, then spent several hours trying to find his way home before his machine ran out of gas.
While the man's cellphone was low on power, police say he managed to call his father at about 3:30 a.m. and the father then contacted police, who began a search.
Paramedics and firefighters joined the search and after about an hour, police say the man spotted the emergency lights on a Niagara EMS ambulance and was able to walk to safety.
The man, who was suffering some minor effects from being exposed to the elements, was treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
