Ontario's police watchdog has been called in after a man was shot in a Richmond Hill park early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred just before 6:30 a.m. when police received a call for "unknown trouble" at Lennox Park near Major Mackenzie Drive East and Yonge Street.

Representatives with York Regional Police say a weapon was discharged and the male victim suffered at least one gunshot wound.

Police said the victim was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While the circumstances leading up to the incident are still unclear, a police source told CP24's Katie Simpson that the incident may be linked to a Toronto homicide.

A 40-year-old woman died Friday after being found with gunshot wounds in a laneway behind Dufferin Mall in the area of Chesley Avenue and Brock Avenue. It was originally believed that the woman was beaten and was suffering from head injuries.

The woman's name was not released.

Police did not elaborate on how the two incidents may be connected.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been asked to probe the Lennox Park shooting.

Typically, the arms-length agency is called in whenever police officers are involved in an incident where someone has died, been seriously injured, or alleges sexual assault.

Police have said officers did not discharge their weapons in the park shooting, Simpson reported.
