The motive of a fatal stabbing that claimed the life of Toronto woman remains unknown as police hope new video of the murder suspect and victim will jog the memory of potential witnesses.

Police said they’ve collected more than 200 hours of surveillance footage related to the murder of Nighisti Semret, a 55-year-old woman stabbed to death while she was walking home from work in the early morning hours of Oct. 23.

New surveillance footage released by police Monday shows the suspect running towards Bleecker Street, while a second video shows Semret, from a distance, walking from the east side of Bleecker Street toward the laneway where she was fatally stabbed.

Det. Gary Giroux told reporters that more police officers have been assigned to the investigation in order to follow up on tips and review any video related to the case.

“We’ve received dozens of calls from the public,” Giroux said during a news conference.

He added that a number of police officers have been offered tips on known individuals in the area who may be a person of interest in the investigation.“It’s extremely time consuming and often difficult to nail people down,” said Giroux.

Police have said they believe the suspect either lives in or is very familiar with the Cabbagetown area.

“He’ll have, I believe, some criminal antecedents,” said Giroux. “This isn’t somebody that just right out of the gate had attacked this woman in this particular way. He’ll have some history of violence and he’ll be somebody who frequents the area, lives in the area and is well-known in the area.”

One day earlier, on Sunday, police had released photos of the clothes Semret was wearing when she was attacked.

By releasing photos of Semret’s outfit -- which includes a grey jacket, navy blue pants and black headscarf with sequin details -- police hope to jog the memory of anyone who saw her the morning she was stabbed.

Semret, a refugee from Eritrea and mother of three, was stabbed once in the arm and a few times in the torso.
