The renovations were supposed to turn the house into a dream home but instead it turned it into a nightmarish hazard.

The house at 185 Coleman Avenue in east-end Toronto has been deemed structurally unsafe by city inspectors. The owners have to tear it down.

The property, located in the Dawes and Danforth Roads area, has been under renovation for about a year.

However, construction went awry in the basement, causing two sides of the building's original foundation to collapse. The rest of the structure became unstable and engineers at the scene concluded that the house could collapse at any given time. Police reacted by cordoning it off as a safety hazard.

Police say a building permit was properly obtained by the city and it was updated by the owner as the work progressed.

One neighbour speculated that shoddy construction practices are to blame for the disastrous renovations. A worker at the site refused to comment on the situation to CTV Toronto.

Heavy machinery now sits on the property as demolition crews prepare to tear the home down Tuesday morning.
