Two teens were pulled from an indoor swimming pool in northern Scarborough and transported to hospital, but one hasn't survived.

The boys are believed to be about 14 years of age and have been taken to Scarborough Grace Hospital. Initial reports estimated their ages to be around 10.

Police at 42 Division told CTV News that one child had a pulse.

"I got a phone call from a friend saying, 'Two of my friends just drowned'," said Jerusan Yoganantham, who knows the victims. "I thought it was a joke ... then I found out it was real. I was so sad."

This happened at a high-rise apartment building at 30 Thunder Grove, near McCowan Road and Finch Avenue East, shortly after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said it appears the children don't reside at the building, but were signed in by a friend. Yoganantham said one boy lived at the building.

Firefighters and police both arrived at the same time, with a police officer jumping in to remove one victim from the pool and a firefighter diving in to retrieve the other.

One young friend of the boys said they didn't know how to swim.

The two teens had finished Grade 8 one day earlier and had been looking forward to a summer off, Yoganantham said.
