A father and son drowned Tuesday after the father tried to rescue the boy as he was swept away by high waves in Lake Huron.

The father, 48, was playing with his 6-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter on Tuesday evening at the mouth of a river that spills into Lake Huron.

The waves were high and turbulent and the boy was carried away. The father reached the boy and yelled to his daughter to call for help. The girl ran to a Bayfield, Ont. marina and then to get her mother from a nearby cottage.

When they returned to the beach they found the lifeless body of the father.

Rescuers searched for the boy and located his body about two-and-a-half hours later.
