Firefighters called to a Christmas Eve apartment blaze in northeast Toronto found one person dead and another lying unconscious on the floor.

The fire started just before 8 p.m. in a low-rise apartment building on Swift Dr., just north of Eglinton Ave. E.

An EMS official confirmed that two people were found inside the apartment that was on fire. One was suffering from second degree burns and smoke inhalation, the other wasn't breathing.

A third person was treated by paramedics for chest pains. She is expected to recover.

Police said it was a relatively small fire, confined to only one apartment, but there was lots of smoke.

There is no word on what caused the fire and emergency officials have not released the gender or age of the deceased.
