Fire officials are looking into what caused a blaze in Scarborough that killed a 45-year-old man Wednesday morning.

Toronto Fire Services were called to the site of the blaze near Warden Avenue and Danforth Avenue just before 9 a.m.

They arrived to find smoke billowing from the basement of a house that contained several apartments.

Firefighters "knocked down" the fire within 10 minutes, according to a statement from Toronto Fire, and were then able to search the smoky basement where they found a male victim.

The man, who has not been identified, is the 17th person to die in a fire in Toronto so far this year.

Officials were trying to pinpoint what caused the blaze. Both the coroner and the Ontario Fire Marshall were called to the scene.

"We are uncertain as to what the reason for this is," said Toronto Fire spokesperson Capt. David Eckerman. "That's what the investigation will hope to prove."

The blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, Eckerman said.

Officials are trying to determine why no smoke alarm was audible when firefighters entered the house.

Under the Ontario Fire Code, failing to comply with smoke alarm rules could lead to a fine of as much as $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations.
