Tactical officers have entered the Mississauga home of a man, reported to be wielding a sword, after trying to coax him out of his house for hours.
Tactical EMS is also on the scene, reported CP24’s Cristina Tenaglia.
Two flash-bangs were set off near the home Monday evening around 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., said Tenaglia. Flash-bangs are devices that make a loud “banging” sounds, commonly used by police as a distraction tool.
Earlier Monday, police set up a perimeter around the house, located on Manzanillo Crescent, and have closed down a section of the street to ensure the public’s safety. Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a safety precaution, said Tenaglia.
Police responded to a call shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, advising them that a sword-wielding man was walking in and out of the house, located east of Britannia Road West and north of Highway 407.
Const. George Tudos told CTV Toronto that officers are trying to talk with the man and resolve the situation without incident.
“In an incident like this we take our time. We have resources available, if it’s going to take us a long time then it will be,” he said. “There’s no rush to get in there, so at this point we’re just going to try and speak with that male and see if there’s something we can do for him.”
Police do not know if there are other people inside the house with the suspect, but say they are not aware of any injuries.
