Motorists were stuck on the Gardiner Expressway for a long period of time after nearly a dozen vehicles were involved in a pileup Friday morning.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred near Dufferin Street at about 8:30 a.m. and it shut down the westbound lanes at the Spadina Avenue exit for more than two hours, resulting in a massive traffic jam.

Two people were taken to hospital – a male who complained of nausea and a person with chest pains – but paramedics don’t believe their symptoms were caused by the crash, said a Toronto EMS spokesperson.

No serious injuries were reported.

Members of the Toronto Maple Leafs were among those who got stuck in the traffic jam, so the team was forced to delay the start of its practice.

Police are urging motorists to take it easy on the roads because many are slippery due to the weather.

Ontario Provincial Police reported several collisions in the Toronto area.

Earlier in the morning, one person was taken to hospital after a vehicle rolled in the Gardiner's westbound lanes, west of the Don Valley Parkway, at about 5:30 a.m.

That crash blocked all the westbound lanes for about 90 minutes.

Paramedics said the person who was taken to hospital suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
